Introduction:

The SS 'Dicky' was a coastal trader that operated in and around Australia from at least 1887 until its loss in 1893. The details of its early operation are unknown but by 1886 it was registered in Hong Kong, and was reportedly involved in a minor incident off the north-west coast of Western Australia in July 1887.

Facts:

A number of attempts were made to refloat the 'Dicky'. At least twice the vessel was refloated, only to rebeach itself. Eventually the wreck of the 'Dicky', including the engines, steam winch, sails, spars, gear, boats and anchors, was sold at auction on the 6th of June 1893

Getting in the Pilbara requires flying to Port Hedland, Newman or Karratha via Perth (daily flights by Qantas), or drive the very long route from either Perth or Darwin

Introduction:

Uluru , also known as Ayers Rock and officially gazetted as Uluru / Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory in central Australia. It lies 335 km south west of the nearest large town.

Facts:

The rock is huge, jutting up about 350m from its barren surrounds. And more interestingly, Ayers Rock extends even further than this amount below ground. Although there are other, similar entities to Ayers Rock – most notably the nearby Olgas and Mount Augustus in Western Australia – it is the only singular monolith with its composition.

Get in:

Uluru Express runs buses out to the rock everyday. uluruexpress@bigpond.com.au They are clean, comfortable and air-conditioned. The services run hourly to every hour and a half. Visitors can see sunrise and/or sunset and can pay for tickets to access Uluru and Kata Tjuta over a number of days for one price. Prices start from $30 per person.
