Introduction:

The views of Mount Fitzroy vary from site to site and greatly based upon the time of day and weather. At sunrise, its massive granite structure turns an elegant rose hue that is well worth the early rise. During the day, it may be seen reflecting off Lago del los Tres or not at all as it can be hidden behind the clouds.

Mount Fitz Roy original name is Chaltén, that in Tehuelche dialect means “smoking mountain”. This is due to a rare aeolic phenomenon that makes its top always appear as it was surrounded by clouds, which gives the mountain a smoking volcano look.

Getting There:

Most travelers to the area travel to El Chaltén by bus from El Calafate. Cheap flights to and from El Calafate are available through LADE , operated by Argentina’s air force. Space can be limited on LADE flights, so try to make arrangements as far in advance as possible. Other airlines offer reasonably priced flights to the El Calafate airport, but these airlines are decidedly more expensive than LADE.
