The castle occupies an elevated site in moorland above Balintore village, a few miles north of the Loch of Lintrathen, near Kirriemuir, Angus. A tower house named Balintor existed on the site in the late 16th century, according to Timothy Pont's maps.

Though a tower house by the name of Balintor had existed on site in the late 16th century, the present-day Balintore Castle was designed in 1859 by William Burn, commissioned as a sporting lodge by David Lyon, MP. Lyon had inherited his family’s millions which were made through investments in the East India Company.
